The importance of the lake was further emphasized when it was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979. The east coast is the most beautiful part of Ohrid Lake. It is part of Galicica National Park and it is protected by UNESCO along with the lake for its natural values. From the east coast road goes along the lake and is an extension with many hotels, tourist settlements and organized beaches.
